Haven't you notice that manhole in Manila is looking differently on the year 2012?

Before, when we talk about manhole, the first thing that comes in our minds is "open manhole" or "missing manhole cover." This is the common concept of people living in Metro Manila. It is because there are a lot of recorded incidents of pedestrians, motorists and light vehicles that fell into it when they passed by. Round manhole covers are primary target of men selling steel. Those persons who tries to earn money in the wrong way by selling government properties like manhole covers.

Raised Manhole Cover
But now, when we talk about manhole, the first thing that comes to my my mind is those round thick metal on the road, bulging, raised up to 3 to 5 inches tall.

That will make you fly or your vehicle to ramp when passed on it. This usually happens when you drive at night time or you are following another vehicle at short distance.

Warning! Danger on the road of Metro Manila

This year 2012, I experienced flying with my motorcycle as I passed along Recto Avenue going to Divisoria in Manila, due to stray raised manhole cover up to 3 to 5 inches tall. There's a lot of this raised manhole in Manila alone. You can find them mostly at the middle of the road along Recto Avenue and sometimes along side of the road of Abad Santos Avenue. I have no idea who to blame during that accident. I just kicked the raised manhole due to my anger while I was helping my motorcycle stand again. And left in shame while other motorists are laughing at me.

Who is to blame?

I don't understand why the government of Manila is allowing this or implementing this system on manholes. It poses danger to motorists and pedestrians. At first, they will put a barrier to protect the open manhole. Then, with the right mixture of cement, they will start to form the placement for the manhole. When the cement is dry, surprisingly, a manhole that is elevated and raised above the level of the road. They have to think about the situation seriously to avoid accidents like the one that happened to me.

It's just amazing to see these raised manholes risen in the middle part of the road at the City of Manila. Haist! Why is the system like that?

Hahaha! This is true. The manhole before was being feared because you might fall into it. Now, the manhole was being feared because you might fly or stumble when you passed on it..

I do not know the reason behind this system in Metro Manila. Maybe the local government or the MMDA or the DPWH can enlighten us.

What do you think?

  1. Recently, I have observed that elevated manholes in Manila are gone. Thank you!! You heard our cries. To the local government, MMDA and DPWH ayos ang aspaltong itinambak nyo sa kahabaan ng Recto Avenue from Avenida going to Divisoria.
